Mikal started On a Wing and a Prayer (OAWAAP) over 10 years ago in Corrales, NM. This non-profit cares for injured and baby birds, with the goal to release the birds when possible. Some non-releasable birds are used for educational programs. She has an amazing ability to engage audiences from kindergarteners to the elderly, and has led to repeated speaking opportunities throughout the state.

Prior to founding OAWAAP, Mikal had enough careers for four or five people. She has been a homesteader in rural British Columbia, a guitarist/singer in a folk-country band, a mom, an award-winning jeweler, a cowgirl on a ranch (with a seven-foot rattlesnake skin she earned the hard way), and a nationally/internationally certified rehabilitator of all avian species except eagles.
